Everything we know about the TRON Lightcyle Power Run coaster coming to Disney’s Magic Kingdom

Disney dropped the bombshell that they were adding an exciting new attraction to Magic Kingdom: a TRON coaster-style ride.

But, just when will the new TRON coaster be open at Disney World?

Somebody is having a birthday…

If you hadn’t already heard, Disney World has a pretty big celebration coming up soon: their 50th birthday!

That happens in 2021 and Disney has promised that this exciting new TRON attraction will be open by then.

Of course, since that date is so far out we don’t know much more than that, but, we do know that construction on the project is underway and signs are even being spotted now in Magic Kingdom:

The attraction itself is based on the TRON Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland. The ride vehicles on that attraction are similar to the ones for Flight of Passage – only instead of being stationary, they move. Here’s a look a model ride vehicle at D23 in August 2019:

Also on display at D23 were the new costumes for Tron cast members. Check them out below:

What about the Tomorrowland Speedway?

There were lots of rumors that the Tomorrowland Speedway would have to close in order to make way for the new attraction, however, that isn’t the case.

The Tomorrowland Speedway needed to be closed during parts of the construction phase and the track was slightly altered to accommodate the coaster. However, the new attraction will be located in an new area, just to the side of Space Mountain:

Refurbishment information

During the construction of the new TRON attraction at Magic Kingdom, there will be some attractions temporarily closed:

Walt Disney World Railroad

Beginning in December of 2018, operations of the railroad will be temporarily “paused”. The trains, however, will be parked at the Main Street Station to allow guests an up-close look at the railroad and one-of-a-kind photo opportunities.

No word yet on how long this refurbishment will last.

To allow for the adjustment of the track, the Tomorrowland Speedway was closed for part of the first half of 2019 but reopened summer of 2019.
