With the announcement of the new paid FastPass system, aka Disney Genie+, coming to both Walt Disney World and Disneyland, there have been plenty of questions.

And, yes, this means that FastPass+, FastPass, and MaxPass are officially retired.

We know it’s a lot of information and overwhelming, to say the least.

But, we are here to try to answer (what we can) when it comes to all of the questions you may have about Disney Genie, Genie+, Lightning Lanes, and more.

Keep in mind that we might not have answers to every question, but we will do our best to provide the necessary information to the greatest of our ability — and as we learn more, we’ll be sure to share that info (and update this post!).

Disney Genie Questions

What is Disney Genie?

Disney Genie is a new digital service built to help you “maximize your park time, so you can have more fun.”

It includes a personalized itinerary feature that helps you map out an entire park day, including attractions, dining, entertainment, and more.

Disney Genie will bring “existing planning features together in one place,” like virtual queues (when available), dining and experience reservations, mobile order, a virtual assistant, and more.

Basically, it’s a planning tool.

Check out our guide on How to Use Disney Genie at Walt Disney World

As detailed by Disney, “Our complimentary Disney Genie service creates your best Disney day inspired by your party’s top interests. Upon launching Disney Genie service in the app, you’ll have the opportunity to share what you’d like to do in a few easy steps. You can plan specific attractions, foodie experiences and entertainment, and special interests like Disney princesses, villains, Pixar, Star Wars, thrill rides and more.”

Disney Genie can even remind you that you’re eligible to book dining reservations and activities within the Enchanting Extras Collection.

disney genie breakdown

Here’s a more detailed breakdown:

  • Tailored Recommendations: Receive attraction and dining recommendations throughout the day inspired in part by what you told Disney Genie service you’re most interested in doing. Disney Genie will also display a good time to go to an experience and an idea of the forecasted wait. If you want to swap a recommendation, you can.

  • A Personalized Daily Itinerary: There is a “My Day” tab where you’ll find Disney Genie recommendations and any plans you’ve made, including dining reservations, Disney Resort hotel reservations, and activity bookings. You can also virtually chat with a Cast Member who can help answer any questions.

  • A Custom Tip Board: You can see estimated wait times for your top attractions, entertainment, and dining. You’ll also be able to order food, make dining reservations, check into a restaurant, request to join an available virtual queue (when available), and even book arrival times for the new Lightning Lane entrance at select experiences, but only if you’ve purchased Disney Genie+. More on that below.

When can you start using Disney Genie?

Disney Genie debuted on Oct. 19, 2021 at Disney World and on Dec. 8, 2021 at Disneyland.

Note: You can start mapping out plans for your trip via the Disney Genie as soon as you have valid theme park admission and a theme park reservation.

How much does Disney Genie cost?

The basic Disney Genie is free for all guests.

Where can you access Disney Genie?

Disney Genie is built into both the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps. It won’t be available via a web browser.

Is Disney Genie the only place you can now view your plans?

No, it’s not. Even though the “My Plans” tab is no longer available in the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps, you can still access plans through the new “Future Plans” tab.

future plans my disney experience app

You’ll then able to see all of your plans, like hotel reservations, park reservations, dining reservations, Genie+ Lightning Lane selections, individual Lightning Lane selections, and more.

view my plans in my disney experience

Can guests only access dining features in Disney Genie?

No, you are still able to place Mobile Orders, make dining reservations, and join walk-up lists like you’ve always been able to in the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps.

But, now, you’ll be able to see dining availability (next available Mobile Order window, reservation availability, etc.) all at once in Disney Genie.

disney genie dining recommendations

How does Disney Genie impact the Virtual Queue process?

The virtual queue location is still in the same place in the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps.

If you tap the three lines in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen, you’ll see a “Virtual Queues” button. When it’s time to join a virtual queue, you can go here.

But, you can also see virtual queue information in Disney Genie.

Remy's Virtual Queue pre-select party

It’s important to note that you may not be able to join the virtual queue directly in Disney Genie; it was hit-and-miss for us on opening day, but that might have just been a glitch.

Whatever the case,, if you don’t see the option to join the virtual queue inside the Disney Genie system, just tap those three lines in the lower right-hand corner and select the “Virtual Queue” option from there.

You should also be able to click the “Preselect Party” button directly in Disney Genie before joining the virtual queue.

This way, you can confirm your party and those who will be riding with you. Remember, confirming your party can be done up to 1 hour before the virtual queue opens.

How accurate are Disney Genie’s recommendations?

You definitely should still have a game plan before your day begins, especially if your goal is to ride as many attractions as possible.

Some of the recommendations don’t make sense and might not align with the preferences you selected.

However, there are moments when the Genie’s recommendations are good. For example, the service might recommend you ride an attraction you were hoping to do and the wait time could work in your favor.

It’s definitely not a bad thing to have the Genie recommending experiences if you’re in between Genie+ and/or individual Lightning Lane return times and you’re not sure what you want to do while you wait.

Disney Genie+ Questions

purchasing genie+ in my disney experience

What is Genie+?

Genie+ is the new paid-FastPass system. It’s similar to the now-retired MaxPass at Disneyland.

You’ll choose the next available time to arrive at a variety of attractions (like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Haunted Mansion, and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run) and other experiences.

When your return time is called, you’ll enter the attraction via the “Lightning Lane,” which is the new word for FastPass lines.

Check out our guide on How to Use Genie+ at Walt Disney World.

Genie+ also includes Disney parks-themed audio experiences and photo features to capture your memories, like augmented reality lenses for those visiting Disney World and unlimited Disney PhotoPass downloads for those at Disneyland.

This means guests at Disney World who purchase Genie+ do not get unlimited PhotoPass downloads.

When does Genie+ go into effect?

Genie+ debuted on Oct. 19, 2021 at Disney World and on Dec. 8, 2021 at Disneyland.

How much does Genie+ cost?

Genie+ offers guests the chance to skip the line for select attractions — for a daily fee.

Pricing is as follows:

  • Disney World: $15.98 (with tax) per ticket per day
  • Disneyland: $20 (no tax added) per ticket per day

Where can you access Genie+?

Both Disney Genie and Genie+ are built into the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps.

When can you buy Genie+?

Guests wishing to purchase Genie+ outside of a package are able to buy Genie+ on the day of their visit, but it differs for Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

Important for Walt Disney World guests: Single-day purchases of Disney Genie+ are only available directly through the My Disney Experience app on your date of visit. Third party 1-day tickets with Genie+ will continue to be sold through March 1, 2022.

Walt Disney World guests can begin purchasing Genie+ starting at 12 a.m. EST (and after).

This doesn’t mean you have to stay up until (or wake up at) midnight to do so or that Genie+ will sell out, but simply means that once the day changes, you can start purchasing Genie+.

As for Disneyland, guests can’t purchase the service until they’ve scanned into the park.

Can you add Genie+ to an already booked Disney vacation package?

Yes, you can add Genie+ to your previously booked vacation package or tickets.

disney genie+ ticket add on

Do I have to get Genie+ for every day of my trip?

No, but there are some important details to take note of, including:

Genie+ can be purchased as an add-on ticket option, valid for the length of guests’ stay, but only for:

  • Standalone, date-based tickets at Disney World
  • Most standalone tickets at Disneyland
  • Vacation packages to both Disney World and Disneyland with these tickets

Otherwise, you’ll purchase Genie+ each day you want to use it as an in-app feature purchase.

This is Important:

  • When Genie+ is purchased with a ticket or vacation package ahead of a visit, Genie+ is purchased for the entire length of your ticket (all days of a multi-day visit).
  • When purchased on the day of visit, guests will purchase Genie+ for a single day.

This means, you do have the option to pick and choose when you want to use Genie+.

lightning lane selections genie+ disney world

Can I purchase it ahead of time?

You can only buy it ahead of time when Genie+ is purchased with a ticket or vacation package.

Disney has said that “when purchased ahead of time, you must purchase Genie+ for the entire length of your stay (all days of a multi-day visit).

You’ll only pay for the Genie+ service for the length of your ticket.

Otherwise, you’ll purchase Genie+ each day you want to use it as an in-app feature purchase.

Important for Walt Disney World guests: Single-day purchases of Disney Genie+ are only available directly through the My Disney Experience app on your date of visit. Third party 1-day tickets with Genie+ will continue to be sold through March 1, 2022.

how to purchase genie+

When purchasing Genie+ for entire length of stay, what about non-park days?

For eligible guests who choose to purchase Genie+ for their entire length of stay, you will only pay for the service on the days you plan to visit the parks.

Remember: When you purchase Genie+ for the length of your stay, the price is based upon your ticket length, not the number of nights in your hotel.

You don’t have to buy Genie+ for non-park days.

Does Genie+ offer perks for guests staying on-site?

Not really, especially because all Disney World guests (both onsite and off) who have purchased Genie+ can book their first attraction starting at 7 a.m. EST.

Disneyland guests can start booking Genie+ selections once they enter the parks.

Note: If your goal is to make your 1st selection right at 7 a.m., it probably makes the most sense to just purchase Genie+ a few minutes before 7 a.m. (instead of waiting up until midnight the night before) so that you are ready to go when the selection windows open. As we said above, there’s no advantage to purchasing it at midnight; you can’t make any selections until 7 a.m. However, if you’re unfamiliar with the new Genie service, we do recommend purchasing it before that 7 a.m. selection window opens up just so you get a feel for the new operating system.

How does Genie+ work with the Park Hopper option?

This option can be used across multiple theme parks and for those with valid theme park admission that has a Park Hopper benefit.

But, keep in mind that you can’t Park Hop until the afternoon. And, in order to Park Hop, you must have first visited the park where you held your Park Pass reservation for that day.

You’ll be able to reserve attractions in a different park than the one where you started your day after 1 p.m. (at Disneyland) and after 2 p.m. (at Disney World), when park hopping begins at each respective resort.

genie+ park hopper lightning lane selection

Does everyone in your group have to purchase Genie+?

No, not everyone in your party has to buy Genie+.

If not everyone in your group wants Genie+ (or you want to save money), you can buy Genie+ on a day-to-day basis, instead of ahead of time for your entire length of stay.

If you’re eligible to (and choose to) purchase Genie+ for your entire length of stay, you will have to purchase the service for everyone in your party.

Keep in mind that if not everyone in your group has Genie+, they won’t have access to the Lightning Lane queue for select attractions.

This isn’t a situation where 1 person in a group can buy Genie+ and then get access to Lightning Lane queues for all guests in their party.

Will Genie+ sell out? Will there be a cap on how many guests can buy it per day?

Disney has confirmed there is no limit on how many people can buy Genie+ on a daily basis.

In the words of Disney (via a Disney Travel Agent webinar held on Oct. 11, 2021): Genie+ “will not sell out for any given day.”

But, keep in mind that there’s a limited number of Individual Lightning Lane purchases available each day, meaning they could sell out.

There is always a chance return times for select attractions will go faster than others and sometimes even run out for the day.

How does Genie+ work with groups?

Guests are able to select eligible Genie+ people from their Family and Friends list in the My Disney Experience app when making Genie+ (and Lightning Lane) reservations, instead of everyone having to do it individually.

Of course, you need to make sure your travel party members are in your Family & Friends list, but they must have valid theme park admission and the same theme park reservation. Otherwise, their names won’t show up or they won’t be able to be added to your Genie+ selections.

confirm party individual lighting lane selection

At Disneyland, you also need to make sure both valid theme park admission is linked within the Disneyland app (for everyone in your party) and that you (and all guests in your party) have a theme park reservation in order to use Genie+ and book individual Lightning Lane selections.

Once you open the Disneyland app (and are also logged in), click the three lines in the bottom right-hand corner, select “Tickets and Passes,” and tap “Link Tickets & Passes” in the middle at the top.

disneyland app link park tickets

Then you can either scan your park admission or manually enter the ID number.

Make sure you do this for everyone in your group who will be using Genie+, so then you can make selections for everyone you’re touring the parks with throughout the day.

As noted above, some of the most high-demand attractions (like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Disney World and Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure) will not be available with Genie+.

If you wish to skip the lines on those, you’ll have to pay for an a la carte individual Lightning Lane pass. More on that below.

How many Genie+ selections can you make at a time?

You’ll make one attraction selection at a time on the day of your visit, with the ability to make another reservation immediately after scanning into an attraction.

At Disney World, everyone with Genie+ can make their first selection starting at 7 a.m. EST. At Disneyland, those who’ve purchased Genie+ can only make selections once inside the park.

You have to redeem a Genie+ Lightning Lane selection before you can book another one — or you’ll have to wait 120 minutes from time of booking, whichever comes first.

You are only able to use Lightning Lane once per attraction per day (for both Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lane).

For example: If you want to make a Genie+ Lightning Lane selection for Splash Mountain, you can only use Genie+ once to ride Splash Mountain on that particular day.

genie+ lightning lane selection booking times

Some other things to note for Genie+ at Disney World:

  • When booking a Genie+ Lightning Lane selection at 7 a.m. — before park opening — the 120-minute rule applies here as well. If you book a selection at 7 a.m. and the park doesn’t open until 9 a.m., you’ll have to wait until 11 a.m. to make another selection.
  • Most of the time, you can book another Genie+ selection as soon as you enter the Lightning Lane. But, if you don’t scan into a ride, you’ll be able to make another selection at the end of the arrival window for the current selection.
  • If your first Genie+ Lightning Lane selection is farther out than 2 hours from park opening (like 1 p.m.), you’ll be able to make another selection 120 minutes following the official park opening time and will most likely be able to grab something earlier than 1 p.m.

Return times can overlap. You need to pay attention to this and make sure you have time for what you’re booking.

Important: Some Disney World attractions require you to scan your MagicBand (or card) at two touch points. If this is the case, you may have to wait to make another Genie+ selection until after the second scan.

How long are Genie+ return times?

The return time window for Genie+ selections are 1 hour. This means you can redeem your Genie+ selection any time within this 1-hour window.

What if I miss my Genie+ return time?

If you miss your Genie+ Lightning Lane reservation for an attraction, that’s it for the day. You won’t be able to make another one for that particular ride.

Sometimes you’ll be given a small grace period, but that’s up to the discretion of the Cast Member.

Tip: Set a reminder or alarm on your phone to alert you that it’s time to redeem your Genie+ selection.

What if a ride breaks down for one of my Genie+ selections?

If a ride breaks down during your return time, you will receive a “Multiple Experience” just like the old FastPass and FastPass+ days.

Certain experiences won’t be included, but you’ll be able to choose another attraction to ride depending on what’s available.

Once the Multiple Experience converts to a Genie+ Lightning Lane selection, it counts as used and you’ll be able to make another selection.

What’s the point of Genie+ selections for shows at Disney World?

While there is no special or reserved seating, if you arrive near the beginning of your window you’ll be allowed to enter before other guests not using Genie+.

This means, especially on a busier day, that you’d most likely be guaranteed a seat and one possibly with a better view.

Can Genie+ selections be modified or canceled?

Yes, these selections can be canceled and replaced with a new attraction reservation. But, you must cancel before the return time window ends.

Important: You can’t rebook or modify in the same window that you cancel. You’ll have to go through the whole rebooking process again, which is time consuming and something to keep in mind.

cancel disney genie+ selection

Will attractions sell out of availability?

There is always a chance return times for select attractions will go faster than others and sometimes even run out for the day.

This is where you’ll have to prioritize certain rides over others and make sure you snag reservations for attractions at the top of your list, especially if you don’t want to wait in a Standby Line.

Tip: Return times for Slinky Dog Dash at Hollywood Studios go fast. If this is your top priority, book a Genie+ Lightning Lane selection ASAP.

disney genie+ lightning lane selection return time completely booked

Remember, you aren’t going to be able to pre-select your return time.

Genie+ is more like adding your name to the waiting list at a restaurant. You’ll be snagging the NEXT available spot in the Lightning Lane line; you don’t get to choose what that time is.

How does Genie+ work with Disability Access Service (DAS)?

The Disability Access Service (DAS) program at Disney World and Disneyland will now include the ability to enroll in the program pre-arrival and for DAS participants to select attractions directly in the app.

These options will be available in addition to the existing, in-person DAS program.

Pre-Arrival Registration

You now have the option to pre-register for DAS before you leave home.

This is done via a live video chat (offered in English only) with a Cast Member as early as 30 days in advance of your park visit.

During your chat with a Cast Member, you’re able to select up to 2 experiences per day (subject to availability) using the new DAS Advance planning option. This pre-selection option is new.

Once you’ve made your selections, if the experiences you choose have availability, you’re then given your return window that you can redeem on the day of your visit. Those return times will show up in your My Disney Experience account.

Per Disney: “Please keep in mind that DAS Advance selections must be booked at least 2 days prior to the day you plan to redeem them, and you will not be able to make selections on the day of your visit.”

Return Time Self-Selection

You also no have a new way to get return times when you are in the parks.

Instead of getting your return times by visiting an attraction and visiting with a Cast member, you are now able to do all of that inside the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps.

Also, know that Genie+ and the individual paid Lightning Lane attractions can be paired with DAS.

But, while the Advanced DAS Selections are free if you qualify for DAS, you’ll have to pay for Genie+ and the individual Lightning Lane Selections.

For more, check out our complete guide to DAS at Disney World.

Can you use Genie+ during Early Theme Park Entry and Extended Evening Theme Park Hours at Disney World?

At this time, no you cannot make Genie+ and individual Lightning Lane attraction selections during Early Theme Park Entry and Extended Evening Theme Park Hours.

How, if at all, will Genie+ affect Rider Switch and Single Rider?

Rider Switch will operate as normal alongside Genie+ at both Disney World and Disneyland.

But, everyone in your group who wants to use Genie+ with Rider Switch must have the attraction booked.

Single Rider lines remain at Disney World and Disneyland.

Is PhotoPass included in Genie+?

Unlimited Disney PhotoPass downloads are not included with a purchase of Genie+ at Disney Word.

But, Disneyland guests who purchase Genie+ will receive unlimited PhotoPass downloads.

What if you don’t have a smartphone?

Now more than ever guests visiting Disney parks need a smartphone, especially when it comes to accessing virtual queues, placing mobile orders, and making Genie+ and additional Lightning Lane selections.

If you don’t have a smartphone, you won’t be able to utilize Genie+. You cannot use it via a web browser.

But, there are still Standby and Single Rider lines that don’t require the use of a smartphone or your credit card. Of course, they also don’t offer the same perks as Genie+.

Important Update to Genie+ & Individual Lightning Lane Selections at Walt Disney World

Beginning February 25 through August 7, three Individual Lightning Lane attractions will be included in the Genie+ service instead of as Individual Lightning Lane Selection purchases.

These attractions are as follows:

  • Magic Kingdom: Space Mountain
  • Epcot: Frozen Ever After
  • Hollywood Studios: Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway

As for Expedition Everest at Animal Kingdom, which is also considered a pay-to-ride offering, it is currently closed for refurbishment through at least April 30. Whenever it reopens, we will let you know where it falls — as an Individual Lightning Lane attraction or included in the Genie+ service.

There are no changes to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, or Flight of Passage. These remain Individual Lightning Lane attractions.

What’s a “Lightning Lane”?

This is the new name for FastPass/FastPass+ lanes.

Check out our guide on How to Book Individual Lightning Lane Selections

What are individual Lightning Lane attraction selections?

There are individual Lightning Lane attractions selections that are not included with Genie+. They are sold separately and are pay-per-use.

If you opt to pay for it, you’ll schedule a time to arrive at up to two “highly demanded” attractions each day using the Lightning Lanes, like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Magic Kingdom and Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure.

Check out our guide on How to Book Lightning Lane Selections at Walt Disney World.

This option can be used across multiple theme parks and for those with the Park Hopper option. So, you can make one selection at one theme park and the second at another theme park. Or, you can make two selections in one park.

Unlike Genie+ which doesn’t offer any perks to guests staying onsite at Disney World, the individual Lightning Lane attractions do have a slight perk if you’re staying onsite:

Onsite Disney World Resort hotel guests can start making these selections starting at 7 a.m. but Disney World guests staying offsite can’t start making selections until park opening — but, they don’t have to be inside the park to do so. Offsite guests just have to wait until the park officially opens before they can make a selection.

Disneyland guests can make individual Lightning Lane options once they enter the parks.

How much will a la carte attractions cost?

Pricing for this option will vary by date, attraction, and park. Pricing typically ranges between $7 and $15 at Disney world and $7 and $20 at Disneyland.

You can check the My Disney Experience and Disneyland apps on the day of your visit for current prices and attraction availability.

You can find pricing next to the individual Lightning Lane attraction.

Disneyland also paused the virtual queue for WEB Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure on Nov. 4, 2021 and for Rise of the Resistance on Nov. 22, 2021. A standby queue is being used for all of these attractions.

A virtual queue could return at a later date or “from time to time.” You’re still be able to purchase entry via the a la carte Lightning Lane option.

How many Lightning Lane selections can you make?

There is a maximum of two purchases per guest per day. You can’t make these selections ahead of time, but only on the day of your visit.

At Disney World, you’re able to choose from a list of available times throughout the day. If you want, you can even purchase both individual Lightning Lane attraction selections right at 7 a.m.

Disneyland guests can only select form the next available times for individual Lightning Lane attraction selections.

How long are return times for individual Lightning Lane selections?

The return time window for individual Lightning Lane selections are 1 hour. This means you can redeem your selection any time within this 1-hour window.

Will individual Lightning Lane selections sell out of availability?

Tip: In no surprise whatsoever, Rise of the Resistance remains a very popular ride, meaning individual Lightning Lane selections are also in high demand. These are known to sell out.

Can I cancel or modify individual Lightning Lane selections?

These purchases are final. You cannot cancel or modify.

Will I get a refund if an individual Lightning Lane attraction selection breaks down?

If a ride goes down and never reopens during your visit that day, you should be refunded for that particular individual Lightning Lane selection.

But, if the ride shuts down and then reopens during your visit, you will not be refunded. This applies to even if you choose not to ride the attraction. You already made the selection, so you will be charged.

If a ride goes down, your return time should be extended throughout the end of the day.

It’s also unclear if your original form of payment will be refunded or if you have to physically visit Guest Relations and ask for a refund. They may give you a gift card for the value of your purchase.
